چکیده
The transport phenomema electrokinesis and dielectrophoresis are studied theoretically, experimentally, and computationally. Novel electrokinesis-based microfluidic devices are synthesized to solve practical engineering problems including turning and injecting analyte bands. The novel experimental methodology used to validate the theory and computational software tools is described and presented. Finally, the computational software tools developed to assist with both practical design and fundamental theory are presented.

Spaceborne SAR Study: LDRD ’92 Final Report
U) This is the final report for a study performed for the 1992 LDRD spaceborne SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) study. This report presents an overview of some of the issues that must be considered for design and implementation of a SAR on a spaceborne platform. The issues addressed in this report include: a survey of past, present, and future spaceborne SARS; pulse-repetition frequency (PRF); ge...
متن کاملFinal Report on LDRD Project: Leaky-mode VCSELs for photonic logic circuits
This report describes the research accomplishments achieved under the LDRD Project "Leaky-mode VCSELs for photonic logic circuits." Leaky-mode vertical-cavity surfaceemitting lasers (VCSELs) offer new possibilities for integration of microcavity lasers to create optical microsystems. A leaky-mode VCSEL output-couples light laterally, in the plane of the semiconductor wafer, which allows the lig...
متن کاملFinal Report for LDRD project \ A New Approach to Protein Function and Structure Prediction "
This report describes the research performed under the Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) grant \A new approach to protein function and structure prediction", funded FY94-6. We describe the goals of the research, motivate and list our improvements to the state of the art in multiple sequence alignment and phylogeny (evolutionary tree) construction, but leave technical details t...
متن کاملExperimentally validated quantitative linear model for the device physics of elastomeric microfluidic valves.
A systematic experimental study and theoretical modeling of the device physics of polydimethylsiloxane "pushdown" microfluidic valves are presented. The phase space is charted by 1587 dimension combinations and encompasses 45-295 μm lateral dimensions, 16-39 μm membrane thickness, and 1-28 psi closing pressure. Three linear models are developed and tested against the empirical data, and then co...
متن کاملLdrd Impacts on Sandia Biosciences
T he face of Sandia's Biosciences program is undergoing dramatic change and growth as the role of this foundational area in U.S. national security becomes increasingly important, for example in the areas of new biothreat organisms (arising both naturally and through genetic engineering), and the exciting prospect of multiple potential routes for improving biofuel production. Simultaneously, the...
